Wedding at The Blazing Donkey, Ham

I had the pleasure of photographing Amy and Matt's wedding at The Blazing Donkey in Ham, near Sandwich (makes me chuckle every time!) It was another incredibly sunny day but, fortunately, some shady spots were forthcoming. Their wedding gallery will be appearing shortly.

Merton College JCR, Oxford 1989

I photographed Lynette and Simon yesterday in Broadstairs. As soon as I saw them, my brain was telling me that I'd met them before. We had a chat about what we'd been doing recently but were unable to find a connection. As I was processing their images in the afternoon, however, I had a flash of inspiration. I had a rummage in the attic and found the following antiquity.

A photo of Merton College JCR (Junior Common Room) taken in Oxford in the summer of 1989. Circled in red at the back is Simon's twin brother Mark, and then myself (sporting some sort of 'hair helmet'), with Lynette at the front.

As they say, it's a small world!

A selection of B&W shots from Sue and David's wedding on Saturday - see the full wedding gallery.

1/100, f/1.8, ISO 200, +2 EV, 35mm (35)

Notice the exposure compensation of +2 to deal with the very bright background.

1/500, f/1.6, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/320, f/1.4, ISO 200, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/250, f/1.6, ISO 200, -1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

This was Sue's response to learning that one of her guests had gone to Felixstowe rather than Folkestone!

1/100, f/5.6, ISO 640, -2/3 EV, 29mm (16-35)

1/400, f/2.0, ISO 100, -2/3 EV, 85mm (85)

1/320, f/1.2, ISO 400, +1/3 EV, 85mm (85)

I was just in the right spot to capture an amusing sequence of this lady pulling a face at some other guests. She looked rather sheepish when she spotted me just after this!

Wedding Photography at Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone

Here's a selection of colour photos (B&W tomorrow) from Sue and David's wedding at the Leas Cliff Hall on Saturday - see their wedding gallery.

1/400, f/1.4, ISO 100, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/320, f/2.5, ISO 100, 0 EV, 35mm (35)

1/400, f/1.4, ISO 100, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/50, f/2.8, ISO 1000, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

The boys were great sports and up for everything!

1/125, f/3.2, ISO 1250, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/100, f/2.8, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/200, f/2.0, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/320, f/1.6, ISO 200, 0 EV, -2/3 FEC, 35mm (35)

I love the combination of E-TTL flash and the Lastolite micro Apollo. I had about 5 seconds to grab this shot before they left the ceremony room. I dialled the flash exposure compensation down by -2/3 (though it wouldn't have been a disaster if I hadn't) since I was so close to them. The ceiling was very low and there were guest between me and the walls - no opportunity for bouncing flash. This is the flash, softened by the micro Apollo on a bracket, pointed directly at them!

1/500, f/2.8, ISO 50, 0 EV, 35mm (35)

The sun was incredibly fierce. I trialled a few shots out in the open with the sun in various positions but I wasn't happy with the results. Fortunately Folkestone's band stand provided a small area of open shade - no disfiguring shadows on their faces. I could have underexposed for the ambient light and then lit them using flash to keep detail in the sky. Since I had a lot of big group shots to do, however, and not much time, I decided not to use flash. I exposed for them and waved goodbye to sky detail.

1/800, f/2.5, ISO 50, 0 EV, 85mm (85)

1/400, f/2.8, ISO 50, -2/3 EV, 200mm (70-200 IS)

1/640, f/2.8, ISO 50, +1/3 EV, 200mm (70-200 IS)

1/640, f/2.8, ISO 50, 0 EV, 200mm (70-200 IS)

1/250, f/4.5, ISO 50, -1/3 EV, 73mm (70-200 IS)

1/125, f/2.8, ISO 320, 0 EV, +1/3 FEC, 22mm (16-35)

I added flash here to reduce the impact of side lighting from the window to the left.

1/100, f/3.2, ISO 400, +1/3 EV, -1/3 FEC, 35mm (16-35)

1/50, f/2.2, ISO 200, +1 EV, 35mm (35)

Any comments or queries welcome.

Wedding at Hotel du Vin, Tunbridge Wells

A selection of photos from Kate and Chris' Wedding last Saturday at the Hotel du Vin, Tunbridge Wells. It was a technically complex shoot with exposure compensation required for the majority of shots. The ceremony and reception room was mirrored, preventing the use of flash, and had tungsten spotlights in the ceiling (giving ugly shadows on people's faces if they stood in the wrong spot). Other rooms had very dark walls, meaning there was little in the way of reflected soft light, which led to low light levels and surprisingly hard light for interiors. Kate's dress was also iridescent meaning that highlights were very easily lost. This combination of factors certainly kept me on my toes!

1/80, f/2.5, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

Wedding at Oakwood House, Maidstone

A selection of photos from Zara and David's wedding at Oakwood House in Maidstone on Friday.

1/250, f/11, ISO 50, (0, -2, +2 HDR) EV, 16mm (16-35)

High dynamic range (HDR) photography is great for exterior shots on bright days. I used Photomatix Pro to process the image.

1/320, f/1.4, ISO 100, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/250, f/1.4, ISO 100, -1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/250, f/1.4, ISO 200, -1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/1000, f/1.4, ISO 100, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/1000, f/1.6, ISO 250, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

They are also lit from the side (look at the shadows on her face), hence only a minor tweak to exposure was required.

1/320, f/2.8, ISO 250, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/640, f/3.2, ISO 250, 0 EV, +2/3 FEC, 35mm (35)

I used flash and had to clone out the reflection it created in the window behind them during post-production.

1/200, f/4.0, ISO 500, +2 EV, 33mm (16-35)

The same set-up without flash and using +2 stops of exposure compensation to bring out detail in their faces.

1/3200, f/1.6, ISO 100, -2/3 EV, 85mm (85)

I love those glasses!

1/1600, f/1.4, ISO 50, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

The sun was incredibly fierce (as it has been for the past 6 weeks) but there was a nice open-shaded spot in the garden.

1/250, f/2.8, ISO 400, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/160, f/3.5, ISO 400, -2/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/1250, f/1.6, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)

1/2500, f/1.2, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 85mm (85)

1/1250, f/2.8, ISO 200, -1/3 EV, 85mm (85)

1/320, f/1.4, ISO 200, +1/3 EV, 35mm (35)
