Oakwood House, is not as well-known as it deserves to be - it really is a lovely wedding venue (reflected by the 86 5* reviews it has on Hitched at the time of writing this!) It features a grand Victorian mansion set in lovely secluded grounds in the heart of Maidstone and offers lots of great opportunities for stunning wedding photography.
The original house features a grand staircase and some lovely oak-panelled rooms (one with a particularly splendid fireplace) and there's also a modern extension with a bar and large ballroom used for the wedding breakfast. Significantly, there's plenty of space, both inside and outside, and the venue claims it can cope with up to 300 guests. There are several rooms which can host a wedding ceremony or it can be held on the verandah with lovely views over the garden. The venue also offers extensive accomodation and a nicely appointed bridal suite.
Zara and David's wedding was photographed on a beautiful sunny day in May. I started with some shots of Oakwood House and then joined a very nervous groom for a quick photoshoot with his best man. I then wandered off to see a much more relaxed bride and her bridesmaids in the final stages of their preparations (making sure I got a shot of Zara's spectacular red shoes) and then joined the guests for candid shots in the build-up to the ceremony. After a very emotional ceremony, everyone wandered out onto the verandah for drinks (another opportunity for candids) and then we took some group shots on the lawn under the shade of some huge trees. I then whisked the bride and groom around the house and grounds for their portrait session (making sure to use the staircase and oak-panelled rooms) and then followed this with more candid shots in the bar and a mock cake cut. I departed as the wedding breakfast was served.
